How Movers and Packers REALLY work. Most movers and packers companies that you will come across through advertisements do not actually own any infrastructure for doing the transfers. They are essentially middlemen and at most just own a single truck (painted with their company name) and company branded packing material. Everything else is outsourced. This is essentially how the model works: Mover and packer company gets an inquiry for a shipment. They dispatch a customer service rep. at your house to give you a quote. Once you finalize your order, they send you their sole truck with another customer service rep. They also send people who will do the packing, but these people are typically not their company employees but people picked up at random whenever an order comes in and paid a measly daily wage – something like Rs 70/day per person. Once the stuff is packed and put in their truck, this truck comes back to their offices. Now the trick here is that more often than not, this is NOT the truck which will take your stuff to your destination. For this they will actually look for a truck which has come from your destination city and going back and strike a deal with him. Note that since the truck is anyways going back they can get a deal done on the cheap. A lot of times they get not a complete truck but a truck which his half filled in which case it is still a lot cheaper for them and then they proceed to somehow stuff all of your stuff from their truck to this truck. Note that this is where most of the stuff gets broken. As these folks somehow manage to put in as much luggage as they can in whatever truck is available. A lot of times they will pump in stuff for two households into a single truck without caring a hoot what happens to your luggage. Also this process leads to lots of delays in your luggage transfer because sometimes they have to wait for days to get a good deal on a truck. Once the truck reaches your destination they again hire a couple of local folks to do the delivery and unpack it for you. Also, if your luggage has come with some other luggage they might again hire another local truck to do the final delivery. Also as this again results in a transfer this is other point where your stuff can get broken. Also, no matter what your movers and packers company tells you, this is how things happen in this industry. The simple reason why it happens like this is because the industry is highly unregulated and this is just the most CHEAPEST way to get things done. Also since volumes are really high nowadays they can afford to get away with very bad service levels. |
